Richard Thompson, Ozomatli among free concerts at Levitt Pavilions

Influential British guitarist, singer and songwriter Richard Thompson, satirical folk rocker Loudon Wainwright III, world-music champion David Lindley and East L.A. funk-rock collective Ozomatli are among the acts slated for free concerts this summer for the Levitt Pavilions in Los Angeles and Pasadena.

Ozomatli opens the 2014 series at Levitt Pavilion Los Angeles on June 8, followed on July 10 by Thompson, then Wainwright (July 17), Radiotron (July 26), a three-day Latin music festival with Sonora Santanera, Chavos de la Cumbia and Jose-Luis Orozco and Friends (Aug. 1-3), a Beatles 50th anniversary salute by the Omega String Quartet (Aug. 16) and L.A.-based Latin rock-soul-jazz band Quetzal (Aug. 29).

In Pasadena, the series opens June 15 with big-band jazz singer Barbara Morrison, eclectic roots-rock band Marley’s Ghost (June 20), Latin salsa-soul-funk singer Cecilia Noel (July 10), a “Princess and the Pirate” family sing-along (July 16), a ‘50s Sock Hop Series over two nights with the Four Preps (July 18) and Johnny Tillotson and Bryan Hyland (July 26), and Lindley (July 25).

The Los Angeles concerts take place at the Levitt bandshell in MacArthur Park at 2230 W. 6thSt., and the Pasadena Levitt bandshell is in Memorial Park at85 E. Holly St.

Along with the music, this year’s performances will include expanded offerings of other activities, including drum circles, a KidZone at each concert, KidSpace Museum and side-stage sessions with local musicians.

“Our basic pursuit is community through music,” Renee Bodie, executive director of Levitt Pavilion — Greater Los Angeles & Pasadena, said in a statement. “We celebrate diversity and bring cultures together on our lawn, and engage and activate youth through our intern and volunteer programs. We really want to reach into the community.”

The Los Angeles and Pasadena venues are part of a national string of Levitt Pavilions supported by the private Mortimer & Mimi Levitt Foundation, founded in 1963 to support the arts, culture and education.
