NBC renews ‘Mysteries of Laura,’ orders two new dramas

In a flurry of announcements late Friday, NBC renewed the Debra Messing dramedy “The Mysteries of Laura” and ordered two new dramas, “Game of Silence” and “The Player.”

Renewal was not a foregone conclusion for “The Mysteries of Laura,” adapted from a Spanish series and starring Messing as a New York homicide detective with a messy home life. Though it opened with strong ratings, viewership declined over the course of the season and reviews were generally negative.

It’s the only freshman series from the 2014-15 season to make it back for a second season on NBC.

The network also ordered up two more dramas Friday. From executive producer Carol Mendelsohn (“CSI”), “Game of Silence” is a revenge tale centered on an Atlanta attorney (David Lyons) and his band of long-lost childhood friends who reemerge after 25 years.

The ensemble cast includes David Lyons, Michael Raymond-James, Larenz Tate, Bre Blair, Conor O’Farrell, Deidrie Henry, Demetrius Grosse and Claire Van Der Boom. David Hudgins will write and executive produce.

“The Player,” starring Wesley Snipes and Philip Winchester, is a thriller set in Las Vegas about a former military operative working as a security expert.

John Rogers will write and executive produce, while John Davis and John Fox of “The Blacklist” will executive produce.
