‘One Direction: This Is Us’ premieres and the guys look like stars
I am way beyond the point where I should swoon over a boy band. But looking at pictures of the five guys who make up the phenomenally popular One Direction at the world premiere of their new documentary film in London on Tuesday, it was hard not to.
It’s the clothes.
The occasion was the screening of “One Direction: This Is Us,” the Morgan Spurlock film about the quintet that was put together just three years ago by Simon Cowell and has skyrocketed to world dominance. (The kind of world dominance that reportedly had thousands of people camping out in front of a hotel in Mexico awhile back hoping to glimpse them, according to Spurlock, and hundreds lining up in London on Sunday, awaiting the Tuesday premiere.
The five showed their sartorial chops when they appeared on the red carpet, pulling off a cohesive all black-and-white look that signaled they are part of a whole, but individuals too.
There was Harry Styles, wearing his white hearts on his sleeve -- and the rest of his shirt. Niall Horan channeled a jock in his athletic jacket. Louis Tomlinson had some punk going on in his short jacket over white T, but added a prim, proper pocket square.
I was struck by Zayn Malik’s coat with silk lapels --and by his stylish scruff. And Liam Payne kind of reminded me of an RAF hero with his leather bomber jacket and narrow tie.
Yes, it did make me want to see the movie. We’ll have to be patient though. It won’t open in wide release until Aug. 29 in Britain and Aug. 30 in the U.S.
