Overall, the Emmys red carpet was one of the best in recent Hollywood history when it came to fashion.

But of course, there were exceptions — no wardrobe malfunctions — but exceptions.

Some looks wilted in the heat (Lena Dunham). Others were ill-fitting or not up to the evening’s high fashion bar.

Then, there were those that were just plain head scratchers. Sarah Paulson, we’re talking to you.

Here are the evening’s worst dressed.

Lena Dunham in Giambattista Valli. Though I applaud Dunham’s frothy, feminine turn in a tiered, cotton-candy like skirt and tailored top, she looked downright uncomfortable in this look, which was wrinkling and wilting as she worked the hot afternoon red carpet.

Julia Roberts in Elie Saab. The pearl and stone embroidery on this midnight blue, plunging dress was striking, but the short hem left one wanting more. It was a lot of heavy detail for such a short dress.

Kristen Wiig in a white silk charmeuse Vera Wang gown, ill-fitting at the top. Her expression didn’t do anything to help; she seemed like she would rather be anywhere but the Emmys.

Kate Mara in J Mendel. This white gown had lace, panels and embroidery in so many unlikely places, you weren’t sure where to look.

Amy Poehler in Theia. This spangled silver sequin number wasn’t special looking — or particularly flattering.

Camila Alves in Zuhair Murad. The white, ¾-sleeve mosaic dress looked so heavy on Alves, it aged her.

Sarah Paulson in Giorgio Armani. The overlapping dotted tulle encircling the dress brought to mind a mosquito net.
