Carnitas are back on the menu at Chipotle

Carnitas have returned to 90% of the Chipotle Mexican Grill restaurant locations. The announcement comes after the chain experienced a pork shortage earlier this year.

The Chipotle carnitas shortage is officially over. After nine months of feeling like your Chipotle order was void of any real meaning, carnitas are back on the menu at 90% of the chain’s restaurants, the company announced in a release Monday.

That means your local Los Angeles Chipotle is still making carnitas tacos, burritos, salads and rice bowls. But they aren’t everywhere yet — there’s still a shortage in select cities in Florida, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Chipotle hopes to have carnitas in the remaining 10% of its restaurants by November.

The restaurant experienced a pork shortage at a third of its restaurants earlier this year, after discovering one of its pork suppliers wasn’t following Chipotle pork protocol. The restaurant requires its pigs to be raised with access to the outdoors or deeply bedded barns. The pork suppliers are also prohibited from using antibiotics and gestation crates.

“The decision to stop selling carnitas in many of our restaurants was an easy one,” said Steve Ells, founder, chairman and co-CEO at Chipotle. “We simply will not compromise our high standards for animal welfare.”
