Modern home tours visit rarely seen Ain, Harris, Schindlers
In a tip of the hat to revered Los Angeles modernist architects Gregory Ain, Rudolph Schindler, Harwell Harris and others, the American Institute of Architects’ Los Angeles chapter is kicking off a series of home tours devoted to small, rarely seen designs that have been thoughtfully updated.
The Modernist/Contemporary Tour launches Sept. 23 in Santa Monica with a tour of Harris’ 850-square-foot house for John Entenza, the Arts & Architecture magazine editor who launched the Case Study program in the 1940s. The home was renovated in 2010 by Michael Folonis.
“Our take on Modernism has a contemporary twist,” said AIA-L.A. associate director Carlo Caccavale. “Projects featured in this tour series are renovated gems that are by no means obscure but are not necessarily at the forefront of people’s minds as being suited to fit today’s needs and lifestyles.”
The tour continues Oct. 7 in Inglewood with a guided tour of two small, side-by-side homes designed by Schindler in 1940. Last year L.A. at Home featured both Schindler houses -- one a Steven Ehrlich renovation, the other the home of an art-loving couple. While updating the home for his daughter and her family, Ehrlich said, he repeatedly asked himself, “If Schindler were alive today, what would he do?”
Tickets are $25 and $35, the tours are limited to 100 people. The series also includes a tour of a Schindler apartment in November and a Gregory Ain apartment in December.
