Longtime ESPN sportscaster Mike Tirico is joining NBC Sports
Mike Tirico, ESPN’s longtime play-by-play voice for “NFL Monday Night Football,” is leaving the sports network to join NBC.
The NBC Sports Group confirmed the long-rumored move on Monday, announcing that Tirico will join the division on July 1. He will work on NBC’s NFL telecasts, Summer and Winter Olympics coverage and selected golf tournaments.
“Mike is an elite talent who can contribute to all of our biggest events,” NBC Sports Executive Producer Sam Flood said in a statement. “The opportunity to add Mike to NBC Sports Group’s lineup which is already the strongest in sports broadcasting is too good to be true.”
Separately, ESPN announced that veteran sportscaster Sean McDonough will take over Tirico’s play-by-play duties on “NFL Monday Night Football.” McDonough has been calling NFL games on ESPN Radio since 2013.
Tirico, 49, spent 26 years at ESPN. He joined the network as an anchor for “SportsCenter” in 1991 after working in local TV in Syracuse, N.Y. He became the play-by-play voice of “NFL Monday Night Football” in 2006.
