La Verne Lutheran scored 16 fourth-quarter points to tie the score late. Danny Miller scored on four-yard run and Trevor Mathews scored on a 40-yard interception return. Mathews, who recovered a fumble and had four of the team’s school-record 10 sacks, keyed a La Verne Lutheran defense that recorded a safety for a second consecutive game.

Gabe Yette of Thacher (1-0) gained 140 yards in 17 carries and scored on runs of 27, 4 and 28 yards against visiting Maricopa (1-1). Thacher quarterback Sam Felton was 7 of 7 for 135 yards and touchdowns of 22, 18 and 40 yards.

Jamie Melas had four receptions for 122 yards and two touchdowns, had 17 tackles and blocked a field goal for Windward (2-0) in a victory at Upland Christian (0-2).

Darryl Moses scored two first-half touchdowns for Compton Centennial, one on a 30-yard run and another on a 25-yard pass reception from quarterback Julius Harris, to give the Apaches (1-2) their first victory after 19 consecutive losses at Centennial.The victory is Centennial’s last victory since a 14-6 decision over St. Anthony in 2002, and is the team’s first under first-year coach Aaron Craver, a former NFL running back.

Dana Hills rallied from a 17-6 deficit when Zach Rivas intercepted his third pass of the night to set up the winning touchdown drive. Brandon Giesen capped a 56-yard drive with a three-yard run after Grant Schwartz completed a 53-yard pass to Nathan Barnett. Parker St. Clair had a 46-yard field goal for Dana Hills (2-0).

Diamond Bar 49, Sonora 13
Jeff Jansen threw for 259 yards and four touchdowns in the first half for Diamond Bar (2-0). Randy Tyler had five catches for 197 yards and four touchdowns, while Jo Beaudion ran for two other scores. Sonora is 1-1.

Esperanza 38, Mira Costa 14
If losing its first regular season game in three years will improve Manhattan Beach Mira Costa’s chances of winning a Southern Section title, the Mustangs would gladly make that sacrifice.

Mira Costa suffered its first defeat since the second week of the 2001 season when it gave up 24 unanswered points in the second half to Anaheim Esperanza at Placentia Valencia High on Friday night.

Mira Costa, ranked No. 18 in the Southland by The Times, reached the Division III final the last four years, only to lose to Newhall Hart in its first two appearances and Sherman Oaks Notre Dame the last two. Don Morrow, in his 12th season coaching the Mustangs, is hoping Division I-caliber opponents such as the No. 24 Aztecs will give them added experience against top-flight programs.

``Those losses to Notre Dame and Hart the last couple years have stung a little bit,’’ Morrow said.

The Mustangs (1-1) held their own against Esperanza (3-0) in the first half, even out-gaining them in total yardage, 215-62. But Esperanza collected three of its four interceptions in the second half, including two by senior linebacker Gary Rogers, turning them into 17 points.

Chris Stevens carried seven times for 168 yards and five touchdowns for host Mojave (2-0). Daniel Ashcraft added a 90-yard kickoff return for another touchdown. Vasquez falls to 2-1.

Junior quarterback Mike Valejo completed eight of 15 passes for 113 yards to lead host Nogales (1-1).

Notre Dame 41, Westlake 6
Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, the two-time defending Division III champion and ranked No. 7 by The Times, scored three touchdowns in a four-minute span of the first half and forced six turnovers en route to the victory at Westlake (1-1).

The Warriors, Division IV champions last season, could muster only three passing yards in the first half and finished with 156 total yards, more than 100 of which came against Notre Dame’s reserves in the fourth quarter.

Rodney Glass rushed eight times for 111 yards and three touchdowns for the Knights (2-0). Cary Harris and Shane Horton each had two interceptions in the win.

Jimmy Clausen was 18 of 26 passing for 273 yards and four touchdowns and Marc Tyler had three catches for 107 yards and also rushed three times for 101 yards, including a one-yard touchdown run for host Oaks Christian (2-0).Joe Guiliani had seven catches for 116 yards, including 35-yard scoring catch. The game ended with 18 seconds left when several skirmishes broke out on the field at Crenshaw. The fighting marred a game in which Dominguez cornerback/quarterback Marvin Johnson intercepted three passes, threw for three touchdowns of 9, 30 and 32 yards, and ran for a 29-yard score in the third quarter to stave off a Crenshaw rally.

Dominguez (2-0), ranked No. 23 by The Times, led at halftime, 18-0, before No. 21 Crenshaw (1-1) rallied and frustrations grew on both sidelines.

Dominuez was called for seven personal fouls - six in the second half - and Crenshaw was whistled for three.After Johnson’s last interception at the Dominguez 47 with 31 seconds left, there appeared to be at least three different on-field altercations that were tended to by Los Angeles Police Depart. of-ficers.

“It’s sad for the kids and sad for the community,” Crenshaw Coach Robert Garrett said.

Osaar Rasshan was nine of 15 passing for 268 yards with two touchdowns and had 66 yards rushing in six carries with two touchdowns for Garey. Rasshan hit Willie Cook on a 23-yard pass over the middle with 22 seconds remainings to give the Vikings (1-1) the victory. Cook finished with five receptions for 189 yards and also caught a 43-yard touchdown pass early in the second half. Littlerock is 0-2.

Quarterback Mike Roy completed 10 of 20 passes for 98 yards, including a 16-yard touchdown to Craig Torline, and Matt Petropulos had a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and four receptions for 58 yards for La Serna (1-1) at Excelsior High. Lafayette Fletcher, Jr. rushed for 120 yards in 12 carries with one touchdown to lead Morningside (2-1) in its loss at Coleman Stadium in Inglewood. Morningside quarterback Funaki Mateaki was 10 of 26 passing for 149 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. Ryan Tatum caught 20-yard touchdown reception from Mateaki.

Sometimes the stats don’t tell the story. The faces of the participants do.And the look on the faces of Mission Viejo players Thursday night was that of relief.

The Diablos, ranked No. 1 in the Southland by The Times, held off No. 11 Santa Ana Mater Dei before 7,500 at Cal State Fullerton. Statistically, the game wasn’t close -- Mission Viejo (2-0) gained 387 yards to Mater Dei’s 16-2 -- but “the score didn’t reflect that” said quarterback Mark Sanchez, who completed 17 of 31 passes for 220 yards.

“Coaches told us it was going to be a dogfight and that’s what it was,” said the USC-bound senior who converted fourth-down passes of 15 and six yards, respectively, to keep alive the Diablos’ two scoring drives. “It was a heavyweight fight.”

One of Sanchez’s fourth-down completions was on a fake punt that kept alive a 48-yard scoring drive that ended with Chance Moline’s one-yard run with 1 minute 53 seconds left in the first half.

“The difference in the game was the fake punt,” said Mater Dei Coach Bruce Rollinson. “And he’s the guy who throws the ball on the fake punt.”

Mission Viejo also scored on its opening drive of the third quarter, a one-yard run by Keegan Gogerty, to go ahead, 14-0.Mater Dei’s Kyle Woody, who had a huge game last week against Orange Lutheran in a 21-7 win, was sacked five times, twice by Wayne Kalagian. Woody completed only five of 13 passes but had completions of 23 and 49 yards in a 79-yard drive that James Brunt capped with a one-yard run with 9:03 left. But that was the last legitimate punch delivered by Mater Dei.

Moline finished with 25 carries for 135 yards and Konrad Reuland caught seven passes for 105 yards for Mission Viejo.
