Deep inside Lower Antelope Canyon in Arizona

From above, the slot canyon looks like any other stretch of Arizona desert. But descending into this canyon, you feel as if you’ve stepped into some elaborate art installation.

Just south of the Arizona side of Lake Powell is Lower Antelope Canyon, a maze of abstract shapes carved from sandstone by wind and water.

In this photo, I threw sand in the air to enhance the light shafts streaming into the canyon.

Access to Lower Antelope Canyon is by guided tour only.

Admission is $6, plus $20 for the tour. You can make reservations or just show up to explore the slot canyon.  (Jason La / Los Angeles Times)
