Torrance PD’s all-female forensics unit

Since 2010, the unit -- made up of civilian employees rather than police -- has responded to more than 4,700 calls, collecting more than 2,100 prints and nearly 1,000 DNA samples. The result: a 400% increase in DNA evidence submitted, with more than 500 suspects identified.
