Two people were killed and seven others were injured Wednesday when their SUV’s tire tread separated and the vehicle overturned, the California Highway Patrol said.

The SUV was southbound on U.S. 395, north of milepost marker 63 and about 18 miles north of State Route 58, about 9 a.m. when it crossed into the northbound lane, spun and overturned, landing on the dirt shoulder, a statement from the CHP said.

Two passengers -- a 29-year-old man and a child -- were killed. The driver, a 32-year-old woman, and six additional children were injured and were taken to Antelope Valley Hospital with minor to major injuries, the CHP said.
