Bicyclist struck and killed by bus on 10 Freeway

A 40-year-old man riding his bicycle on the 10 Freeway in Alhambra early Sunday was killed after being struck by a transit bus.

The bicyclist was riding about 4:30 a.m. in the carpool lane on the eastbound side of the freeway near Garfield Avenue, according to Officer I. Vivas of the California Highway Patrol.

The transit bus, which was also traveling in the eastbound carpool lane, “suddenly collided” with the biker, Vivas said. The impact sent the bicyclist onto the train tracks in the center median of the freeway.

The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity was withheld pending notification of his family, according to Lt. Larry Dietz of the Los Angeles County coroner’s office. It was unclear why he was on the freeway.

It was not immediately clear what type of bus was involved in the crash. Kim Upton, a spokeswoman for L.A. County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, confirmed that a Metro bus was not involved in the collision.
