CHP officer patrolling near San Francisco’s ‘Super Bowl City’ is stabbed, authorities say
A California Highway Patrol officer was stabbed Tuesday near “Super Bowl City” in San Francisco, above, an entertainment center for fans visiting the Bay Area for Sunday’s big game.
A California Highway Patrol officer was slashed in the neck Tuesday morning by a man walking near an on-ramp of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, officials said.

The seven-year CHP veteran and his partner responded to a report of a pedestrian on the freeway near 4th and Bryant streets when they saw a man walking up a bridge on-ramp and asked him to return, said Officer Vu Williams of the CHP’s San Francisco office. After walking toward them, the man pulled out a knife, slashed the officer’s throat and ran away, he said.
The officer was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where he is being treated for life-threatening wounds. Williams said the officer’s condition appeared to be improving.
San Francisco police arrested the attacker a few blocks away. His identity was not immediately released.
Streets in the area, including highway ramps, were closed as police and the CHP investigated the scene.
The attack occurred more than a mile from Super Bowl 50 activities. The Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers clash in Super Bowl 50 on Sunday in Santa Clara, bringing thousands of football fans to the Bay Area.
