Holy cow! Cattle truck tips over in Palmdale

There was a literal cow-tipping incident in Palmdale on Friday afternoon.

A semi-truck hauling 160 cows overturned near a roundabout at East Palmdale Boulevard and 47th Street East shortly after 11 a.m., said Vanessa Lozano, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

It is unclear why the vehicle flipped onto its side in the single-vehicle accident and how fast it was moving, authorities said, adding that the incident was still under investigation.

A whole herd of firefighters, sheriff’s deputies, animal control workers and even a few local ranch hands were on the scene trying to extricate the animals from the vehicle and to keep them calm, Lozano said.

“They’re trying to wrangle up the cows so everything can go back to normal,” she said. A veterinarian was en route Friday afternoon to assess the cattle.

The driver was uninjured, and no other vehicles were involved, said Deputy Orlando Martinez with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Palmdale Station.

Television news footage showed authorities on site erecting a makeshift pen out of pieces of fencing along the roadway.
