Gunman shoots himself after trading fire with sheriff’s deputy in Norwalk
A gunman shot and wounded himself during a shootout with a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy in Norwalk, authorities said Friday.
The shooting occurred after 8:58 a.m. when authorities received reports of a man near the 605 Freeway and Firestone Boulevard, Lt. Eric Smitson said.
A deputy searched the area and found the man in a Target parking lot at 10600 Firestone Blvd.
There was an exchange of gunfire between the man and the deputy, Smitson said.
Shortly after the gunfight, the man shot himself, Smitson said. The deputy was not injured.
When firefighters and paramedics arrived, they found the suspect on the ground, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
The wounded man was taken to an area hospital, fire officials said. His condition and injuries were not immediately known.
The shooting comes days after a sheriff’s sergeant was shot and killed in Lancaster.
Sheriff Jim McDonnell said Sgt. Steve Owen, a beloved member of the Lancaster sheriff’s station, was executed Wednesday when he responded to a burglary call.
Trenton Trevon Lovell, 27, of Lancaster, was arrested in connection with Owen’s death.
