Knife-wielding man shot dead by LAPD in Van Nuys was suspected in stabbing, police say
A man shot and killed by Los Angeles police Sunday afternoon in Van Nuys was suspected of stabbing someone and was armed with a knife when confronted by officers, police said Tuesday.
Rammy Jaradat, who would have turned 27 this week, died at a hospital, Los Angeles County coroner’s officials said.
LAPD Chief Charlie Beck told police commissioners Tuesday that the shooting happened after officers responded to reports of a “screaming woman who had been attacked by a man with a knife.”
Van Nuys Division officers went to an apartment in the 6900 block of Kester Avenue and found one person with stab wounds and at least two other people with other injuries, Officer Matthew Ludwig said.
Other officers arrived on the scene and found the suspect outside the apartment with a knife, Ludwig said. It was unclear what prompted police to open fire.
No officers were injured, Ludwig said. The condition of the injured people found inside the apartment was not known Tuesday.
Jaradat was the fourth person shot and killed by LAPD officers this year. On-duty officers shot and killed 21 people in 2015.
Like all shootings by LAPD officers, the deadly encounter will be reviewed by the district attorney’s office, Police Commission and its inspector general.
