High waves and high temperatures hit the Southland
The Southland began warming up for its first heat wave of the year Thursday, with highs reaching the mid-80s and coastal areas seeing some impressive surf.
Waves reached 14 feet at the Wedge in Newport Beach, as many residents flocked to the water to escape inland heat.
Warming will continue through Saturday, with highs in the Los Angeles area hitting the upper 80s, and inland regions sizzling in the 90s and 100s, forecasters say. A high of 103 is forecast for San Bernardino on Friday.

Coastal areas will see highs in the 70s and 3- to 6-foot waves Friday, with a high risk of rip currents and dangerous swimming conditions.
Sunday will bring a cooling trend. San Bernardino’s high should dip to 97; L.A.’s high will drop to a more comfortable 80.
