Kern County winds overturn multiple big rigs and close roads
Gusty winds throughout the Mojave Desert overturned at least 10 big rigs and prompted highway closures throughout Kern County on Tuesday, authorities said.
No major injuries have been reported, said Officer Scott Wyatt of the California Highway Patrol’s Mojave Division. The big rigs have prompted closures of sections of highways 14 and 58, Scott added.
The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory for the southwestern California region Tuesday morning until noon Wednesday, The service predicted gusts of more than 60 mph, with the most severe winds near the Grapevine, mountainous areas and the western Antelope Valley along the 5 Freeway.

Winds strong enough to topple trees and power lines will cause driving difficulties for large vehicles and kick up dust and sand, reducing visibility in desert areas to less than half a mile, according to the advisory.
Strong winds could also cause rip currents and high surf in waters along Central Coast beaches, as well as minor flooding in coastal areas.
