Gunman kills man on porch in front of his 12-year-old son

A 45-year-old man was shot and killed Friday while watching his 12-year-old son and other children performing football drills in an unincorporated area of South Los Angeles, authorities said.

The shooting occurred about 5:45 p.m. in the 1600 block of West 110th Street in the Westmont neighborhood, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The victim was sitting on the porch of a house, watching his son and other children being taught drills from other adults, when a car pulled up in front and a man got out of the passenger seat, authorities said.

The gunman walked up to the man on the porch and shot him several times, then got back into the car and drove off westward as children and adults ran for cover, according to the sheriff’s department. The victim, who does not live at the home, was found lying on the porch by deputies and pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives are still investigating the motive for the shooting. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is asking anyone with information about the shooting to call (323) 890-5500 or provide an anonymous tip at (800) 222-8477.
