Lost biker found dead after weather, terrain impede rescue attempts
A 34-year-old man who got lost overnight after setting out on an 18-mile bike ride was found dead Sunday along a stretch of Cleveland National Forest.
Andres Marin left his home Saturday morning for a Corona trail that leads into Cleveland National Forest, said a spokesman for the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. About 5:30 p.m., Marin called relatives at home to say he was lost and would try to make it down the hill before it got dark.
Family members called authorities and a search was initiated at 6 p.m., but because of bad weather, rough terrain and other unsafe conditions, rescue teams weren’t able to make their way up the trail Marin had taken. The weather also stopped helicopters from being used.
Rescue crews had to wait until about 6 a.m. Sunday, after conditions improved, to head toward Skyline Trailhead. A search team found Marin’s body at 10 a.m. on North Main Divide Road near Corona.
The Riverside County coroner’s office, which took over the investigation, hasn’t determined a cause of death, but said there were no signs of foul play.
