Authorities in San Dimas captured a mountain lion that was roaming the streets shortly after sunset Sunday evening.

The animal was spotted prowling along Bonita Avenue about 7:45 p.m. and was hanging about in a dirt lot near Bonita and Eucla avenues in the San Gabriel Valley city, said Sgt. Jorge Chavez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The area has mostly commercial properties, including shops and a bowling alley, and is about one block from the 57 Freeway. Sheriff’s deputies monitored the lion while waiting for assistance from the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control.

An animal-control official used a net to capture the lion shortly after 8:30 p.m., said sheriff’s Lt. Thomas Reid.

No tranquilizers were used during the capture, and the lion was not injured, Reid said. It was unclear if the lion was an adult or cub.
