Search for gunman in Chula Vista called off

An hours-long SWAT search for a gunman suspected of shooting two people at a Chula Vista bus stop Saturday morning was unsuccessful.

Officers went unit to unit at a self-storage facility on Anita Street just west of Broadway, where the gunman was last seen, but they found no one, authorities said. Police suspect he may have slipped away before officers set up the perimeter in the area. The search was called off about 1:30 p.m.

The shooting was reported about 6:25 a.m. at Broadway and Palomar Street, said Capt. Lon Turner. Three victims were at a bus stop when someone they may have known walked up and an argument ensued, he said.

Two of the victims were shot in their lower extremities. Their injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, police said. One victim ran to a nearby AM/PM for help, and a witness went to a nearby 24 Hour Fitness to call 911, police said.

The gunman was described as Latino, in his 20s, 5 feet 10 inches tall, heavy set, wearing dark clothing and carrying a handgun.
