Ex-Oakland Raider linebacker killed in high-speed crash

Former Oakland Raiders linebacker Thomas Howard died early Monday in a high-speed crash that also killed another man, according to media reports.

A California Highway Patrol spokesman told KRON 4 News the accident occurred about 12:50 a.m., when Howard, driving a BMW sedan, was speeding on Interstate 880 in Oakland when he lost control and slammed into the back of a semi-truck, the station reported.

The BMW flew into the air, crossed the center median and struck two oncoming vehicles, according to reports. Howard was killed, along with one of the drivers he struck, described as a 55-year-old man.

Howard, 30, was drafted by the Raiders in the second round of the 2006 NFL draft. He spent five seasons with the Raiders before signing with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2011. He signed this season with the Atlanta Falcons but was recently released from the team.
