Washington murder suspect surrenders to Santa Monica police

A man suspected of gunning down a motorist at a Tacoma, Wash., convenience store has surrendered to Santa Monica police after more than a week on the run, authorities said.

Robert Deshawn Grott, 29, turned himself in to officers at Santa Monica Police Department headquarters at about 8:35 p.m. Tuesday, according FBI officials.

Federal and local authorities had been searching for Grott since the Feb. 1 fatal shooting of Julian Thomas, 23, and said that Grott was wanted on a Washington state arrest warrant on a charge of first-degree murder.

Authorities had warned Los Angeles residents to watch out for Grott, saying he was most likely armed and dangerous.

Prosecutors say nearly four dozen shots were fired into and around Thomas’ car at an AM/PM convenience store in Tacoma. Thomas was struck more than 10 times, according to the Pierce County prosecuting attorney’s office.

The shooter reloaded twice before rolling away on a skateboard, prosecutors said.

The suspect’s brother -- Rashaad Dominique Grott, 22 -- turned himself in to deputies in West Hollywood last Thursday, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. He told authorities that he drove his brother from Tacoma to Los Angeles, the Sheriff’s Department said.

He is charged with helping his brother flee the state, prosecutors said.
