A fast-moving, 300-acre fire in Lompoc moved dangerously close to homes and a Spanish mission, officials said.
Santa Barbara County firefighter Jesse Esparza trains his hose on a fast-moving brush fire that charred 300 acres near La Purisima Mission State Historic Park in Lompoc. Authorities evacuated about 1,200 people and their livestock. Neither the 228-year-old Spanish mission nor other structures were damaged by the blaze, which broke out about 1:30 p.m. June 29.
