Deputies shoot, kill motorist who allegedly hit officer with vehicle

Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies fatally shot a motorist Friday afternoon after his vehicle allegedly struck an officer, authorities said.
The injured deputy was rushed from the scene at an Athens area strip mall to the hospital, where he is now listed in stable condition, said Steve Whitmore, a department spokesman.
The deputy was conscious and alert en route to the hospital, according to a source familiar with the investigation.
Deputies were investigating a possible kidnapping in the 11400 block of South Vermont Avenue about 2:45 pm when the incident occurred, Whitmore said.
“The suspect’s vehicle first struck a parked car and then struck a deputy,” Whitmore said. Fearing for their safety, deputies shot the suspect, he said. Whitmore cautioned that sheriff’s investigators are still gathering information about the incident. He said the area around the strip mall is now no longer blocked off.
