Ohio school shooting suspect pleads not guilty in 3 deaths

T.J. Lane pleaded not guilty Friday to charges he killed three students and wounded three others in a shooting at a high school in suburban Cleveland in February.

Lane, 17, appeared before Geauga County Common Pleas Judge Forrest Burt, who set bail at $1 million, a court spokeswoman said by telephone. The defendant was returned to the juvenile detention center but is scheduled to be transferred to the county jail on June 18.

Lane, who will be tried as an adult, faces life in prison if convicted.

Earlier this week, Lane was indicted on three counts of aggravated murder, two counts of attempted aggravated murder and one count of felonious assault.

According to authorities, Lane fired 10 shots from a .22-caliber handgun the morning of Feb. 27 at a group of students sitting at a cafeteria table at Chardon High School. He then fled but later surrendered to authorities about a mile from the school, police say.

Police say Lane admitted taking the gun from his uncle, and also brought a knife to school that day.

Lane attended Lake Academy, a nearby alternative school, and was at the Chardon campus waiting for a bus.
