House Democrats sing to Obama: ‘Let’s Stay Together’
“Let’s Stay Together” is turning into something of a new anthem for the Democratic Party.
Last week, President Obama sang a bit of the Al Green tune during a fundraiser at the landmark Apollo Theater in Harlem, a moment that became an instant sensation.
Friday, when the president came to speak to the House Democrats’ retreat in Cambridge, Md., he left with a DVD that included a new rendition from 25 members of the caucus, including the adapted line, “We’re so in love with you.”
Another, per a Democratic aide, went: “We’ll help you turn red states to blue.”
“What I did not realize was that you ... had a reverend who can preach as good as Al Green in John Larson,” Obama told the group, referring to the Democratic caucus chairman.
The group recorded their version Thursday night after a caucus dinner.
Billboard reported on Thursday that the original Al Green tune has seen a sales spike ever since the president briefly covered it. For the week ending Jan. 22, it was downloaded 16,000 times -- a jump of 490%.
The Obama campaign now offers a clip of the president’s rendition as a ring tone on the reelection website.
