Bindi Sue Irwin: All grown up and courting controversy
Bindi Sue Irwin, 15, is now a glamorous young woman carrying on the legacy of her late father, “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin. But lately she’s been the target of controversy. (Australia.com / EPA)
Most of us probably remember Bindi Sue as just an itty-bitty girl. Here, she’s being held aloft by her daredevil dad while her mother, Terri, reaches up a watchful hand. The family is shown at the 2002 premiere of “The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course.” (Sebastian Artz / Getty Images)
She always seemed poised beyond her years. Here, she animatedly takes questions from National Press Club President Jerry Zremski during a news conference just a few months after the tragic freak accident that took her father’s life. SeaWorld announced last week that Bindi Sue was its new youth ambassador and the face of its new “Generation Nature” program. The announcement was seen by some as a way for SeaWorld to combat growing criticism about keeping orcas and other creatures in captivity for entertainment, particularly in the wake of the acclaimed documentary, “Blackfish.” Here Bindi and her mom are shown earlier this year at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards in Sydney. For her part, Bindi Sue has not addressed the controversy directly. However, she has used her Twitter account to retweet fans and followers telling her to stay strong in the face of the uproar, and congratulating her for raising awareness about wildlife conservation issues. (Gaye Gerard / EPA)
