Letters: Bashing Bain

Re “Obama stays on the attack,” July 15

As a former Wall Street and city of London investment banker, I accept that some focus on the excesses of that sector is justified. However, President Obama’s recent spate of attacks on Bain Capital and Mitt Romney are out of line.

I have never conducted any business with that company, nor do I know personally any of its management, board members or employees. Bain is known to be a respected, efficient global consulting company operating within the law and within the framework of a capitalistic society. One of its legitimate and commendable objectives is to make companies more valuable. Mergers and takeovers invariably involve layoffs but frequently also job creation.

Layoffs result in hardship, but that is the risk any employee must face.

I am so tired of hearing the same old things from both candidates. Each has had his past raked over the coals ad nauseam.

When will the candidates talk about something that really matters? When are they going to discuss their plans for the future of the country? When are they going to offer details rather than flimsy words?

Someone once asked, “What if they had an election and nobody came?” That doesn’t seem impossible.

The Obama campaign looks ignorant in inferring that Romney was involved with Bain after he left to run the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Romney performed a heroic deed in salvaging the 2002 Olympics after a massive scandal. For the life of me, I don’t understand why the Obama campaign would want to draw attention to that. I worked on the 1984 Summer Olympics for five years, and believe me, there is no time for anything else.

Romney salvaged the 2002 Games; Obama’s campaign brings this up at its own peril.
