Letters: Remembering Westmont
Re “A deadly distinction,” Jan. 19
Thank you for covering the neglected area of Westmont, the small, unincorporated community between Los Angeles and Inglewood that has L.A. County’s top homicide rate.
I lived on 93rd and Figueroa streets for 25 years. I tell my children that it’s a million miles from that street to Valencia, where they were raised.
Since I feel that education may be the best way for the children in that area to leave, I helped to create a scholarship for some of the area’s students.
We must all try to help improve impoverished communities.
I am thankful that I had two parents who were married for 49 years. They did a great job raising and protecting their children. The scary reality is, you don’t know how bad the area is until you leave.

As laudable as the 37% decline in homicides since 2007 is, there is something perverse about taking any comfort in the fact that “only” 594 people were murdered in Los Angeles County last year.
