Skelton: Brown’s plan is bad for some schools

Gov. Jerry Brown has launched a passionate campaign to change how Sacramento distributes money to school districts.

But George Skelton says in his Monday column that the governor’s plan isn’t as fair as Brown says it is.

“It’s not that simple, of course,” Skelton writes. “Nothing about California school finance is.”

Calculations by the Education Department show that more than half of the state’s largest districts would get less money under Brown’s plan.

Los Angeles, Compton, Long Beach and San Diego and others would get more money. Anaheim, Irvine, San Jose and Torrance would be among those getting less.

“It’s like robbing Peter to pay Paul, with the robber fancying himself as a Robin Hood,” Skelton writes.
