Woman charged with trying to smuggle 38 pounds of marijuana through Burbank airport
An Alabama woman is suspected of trying to smuggle nearly 40 pounds of marijuana through Hollywood Burbank Airport late last month.
Ashley Coleman was attempting to board her Atlanta-bound flight on Dec. 30 when, according to the Burbank Police Department, baggage screeners found two suitcases associated with the 25-year-old from Birmingham filled with vacuum-sealed bags of marijuana.
A total of four bags of marijuana, weighing 38 pounds, were found.
She was arrested and later charged by the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office with one count of attempting to transport marijuana out of state, according to Burbank Police Sgt. Derek Green.
Although recreational marijuana became became legal in California in 2016, it is illegal in Georgia. Cannabis is a controlled substance federally, and it is illegal to transport the drug across state lines. California law prohibits a person 21 and older from transporting more than an ounce of dried marijuana product.
Coleman is currently being held on $20,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 16.
