Duo takes third

The Laguna Beach High track and field teams competed Saturday at the CIF Southern Section Track and Field Championships at Cerritos College in Norwalk.

Competing in Division 4, the Laguna girls finished in 15th place, and the boys’ team in 39th place. Oaks Christian won both the Division 4 girls’ and boys’ titles.

Individually, the Breakers came up with six top-nine finishes in five events, and a had one relay team (girls’ 4 x 400) place top nine. Coco Putnam (girls’ 400 meter dash) and Jackie Cenan (girls’ shotput) both earned a third-place finish in their respective events.

Top finishes by the Breakers at CIF finals:

Division 4 Girls: 400-meter dash (Coco Putnam, 57.34, third); 3,200-meter run (Pearl Shoemaker, 11:52.74, ninth); shotput (Jackie Cenan, 37-feet, 4 inches, third; Malia Helms, 34-11 1/2, eighth); 4 x 400 meter relay team (Regan Caraher, Putnam, Blake Turner, Bella Fonk, 4:15.85, eighth).

Division 4 Boys: 110-meter hurdles (Charlie Warner, 15.85, ninth); 300-meter hurdles (Brody Seebass, 41.28, seventh).

Girls’ Sand Volleyball

The Breakers reached the championship match of the Interscholastic Beach Volleyball League postseason tournament Saturday and took on Mira Costa at Ocean Park in Santa Monica. The Breakers were edged by the undefeated Mustangs, 2-1.

The Breakers’ point came from the team of Alexandra McKeown and Katie Gavin who won by scores of 25-23 and 21-16 over the Mira Costa team of Rio Frohoff/Avery Hazelrigg.

Also competing in the final for the Breakers were the teams of Cameron Dorn and Katelyn Carballo, and Kendyl Brennan/ Lauren LaMontagne. Dorn and Carballo fell, 21-15, 22-20, 15-3, to the Mustangs’ Emma Smith/Piper Monk, and Brennan and LaMontagne lost, 21-16, 21-19 to Presley Forbes/Sunny Villapando.

The Breakers, who won the league’s South Coast Division title, started the postseason tournament May 9 and swept Santa Monica Pacifica Christian (3-0). They also swept Redondo Union (3-0) May 16 and Saturday beat both Westlake (2-1) and South Coast Division rival Saddleback Valley Christian (2-1, match called), the latter in the semifinals.
