The Orange County Red Cross is offering a number of CPR and first-aid

classes at the Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Medical Center,

17100 Euclid Ave., Fountain Valley.

A basic CPR review will be held from 8 a.m to noon Saturday and will

cost $30. It is a refresher course for those who hold American Red Cross

Heart Assn. CPR certificates issued less than a year ago.

A community CPR class will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 13 at a

cost of $45. This class is to teach individuals how to respond to

breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, children and infants.

A community first-aid and safety class will be held from 8 a.m. to 6

p.m. Jan. 20 and will cost $60. The intent of this course is to teach

individuals how to respond to sudden illness, injuries, breathing/cardiac

emergencies in adults, children and infants.

An adult CPR and first-aid basics class will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Jan. 27 at a cost of $45. This class will teach individuals to respond to

sudden illness, injuries and breathing/cardiac emergencies in adults.

Community Clinic receives grant for Stop In Center

PacifiCare Foundation and its Allocation Committee Board of Directors

has donated $10,000 to the Huntington Beach Community Clinic’s Stop In

Center program.

The Stop In Center is staffed by adolescent counselors in 11

elementary and four middle schools in the community. Two new middle

schools will be staffed this month. The focus of the program is to

redirect students toward academic and personal achievement by dealing

with issues such as gangs, violence, low self-esteem and lack of

motivation.

There are more than 13,000 students attending the schools where the

Stop IN Centers are located.

Water district reappoints three members

The Metropolitan Water District of Orange County Metropolitan Board

reappointed three of its five representatives. They are Wes Bannister of

Huntington Beach, Peer Swan of Irvine and Col. John V. Foley of Laguna

Niguel.

As a result of legislation passed last year, the Metropolitan Board

will be reduced from 51 directors to 38.

Art Center to host regional artists

The Huntington Beach Art Center will presents its “Centered on the

Center, 2001” exhibit, which will showcase more than 200 regional artists

in a salon-style setting. It is scheduled from Feb. 3-18 during library

hours. An artists’ reception will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Feb. 3.

This annual, open call, non-juried exhibition will include more than

400 pieces of artwork in the three main exhibition galleries. For more

Western Digital supports local youth program

Boys and Girls Clubs in Orange County received a $25,000 Christmas

present in the form of a grant from Western Digital Corp. The money,

which will go toward the Crossroads-Teens Turn program, will help the

collaborative efforts of the 16 Boys and Girls Clubs in the county to

provide critical programs and services to teens ages 11-15.

Crossroads identifies a variety of activities that can turn juvenile

criminals around and help youth gain self-confidence and increase

knowledge while instilling positive attitudes and values. The 16 clubs in

Orange County serve more than 40,000 youth ages 5-18.

The Crossroads-Teens Program, after just 19 months in operation,

Donations make holiday party possible

On December 21, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley hosted the

On Dasher, On Dancer Christmas party for 200 youth in Huntington Beach

and Fountain Valley at their Kingston Branch.

Each year, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley hosts this

special party for club members. It is designed to give children from

low-income families and other needy youth a special night to remember.

The party was made possible through donations received at the Club’s

22nd annual Benefit Dinner & Show held Sept. 22, cash donations from

Huntington Beach Sunrise Rotary and donations through the Toys for Tots

Program.

All three club sites are furnished with computer labs, art rooms,

outdoor playgrounds, gymnasiums and education centers. For more
