Eagles notch first win
Sophomore Mike McDaniels had a no hitter for 4 2/3 innings and
persevered to collect complete-game victory as the host Estancia High
baseball team tallied its first win this season with an 8-2 triumph
over Los Amigos in a consolation game of the Newport Elks tournament
Saturday.
McDaniels fanned nine and allowed just two hits in seven innings
while retiring the final seven batters he faced.
The Eagles (1-4) scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth to
break the game open after Los Amigos (1-4) had tied the game at 2
with two runs in the top of the fifth.
Jose Jauregui’s bloop single over the second baseman’s head began
the five-run rally.
Jeremy Hauser went 3 for 4 with four RBIs, including two on a
single in the sixth. Ryan Gleason went 3 for 3 and Evan Van Geem
tallied two hits, including a two-out RBI triple in the fifth. Hauser
doubled in Van Geem to give Estancia a 3-2 lead.
Kane Curran threw a no hitter for the Estancia frosh-soph team in
a 5-0 victory over Calvary Chapel Friday.

Sailors breeze to win
* BASEBALL: Sophomore Tyler Parker allowed just two hits in five
innings and picked up his second victory after the host Newport
Harbor High baseball team defeated St. Bernard 8-1, in a consolation
game of the Newport Elks tournament Saturday.
Parker (2-0) struck out five and walked just one while senior Mike
McLean retired the side in order the final two innings to preserve
the win for Harbor (3-2).
McLean also produced with the bat, going 3 for 3 with two runs
scored an RBI.
Taylor Young doubled in two runs and finished the five-game
tournament 9 for 15 with two doubles and five RBIs.

UCI’s Turpin places 13th
* TRACK AND FIELD: UC Irvine senior Annmarie Turpin finished 13th
in the pentathlon at the NCAA indoor track and field championships in
Fayetteville, Ark., Saturday.
Turpin compiled 3,779 points over the five events. She had marks
of 8.86 in the 60-meter hurdles, 5 feet, 6 inches in the high jump,
33-1 3/4 in the shot put, 17-10 3/4 in the long jump and 2:22.65 in
the 800.
Hyleas Fountain of Georgia was the winner with 4,412 points,
followed by Arizona State’s Jacquelyn Johnson (4,263) and Cal’s
Brooke Meredith (4,189).
Day captures second
* TRACK AND FIELD: Cal Poly San Luis Obispo freshman Sharon Day, a
Costa Mesa High product, finished second in the women’s high jump
Saturday at the NCAA indoor championships in Fayetteville.
Day cleared 6 feet, 1 1/4 inches for the Mustangs. Georgia Tech’s
Shonte Howard, the former Riverside North standout whom Day competed
against fiercely in 2002, won the event at 6-3 3/4.
Chandy, Gordon shine
* TRACK AND FIELD: Sophomore Zach Chandy and junior Laura Gordon
won two events each, representing Sage Hill School in the Tri-County
Small Schools track and field invitational at Moorpark High Saturday.
Chandy won the 200 meters (22.4) and the 400 (51.2), while Gordon
won the 100 hurdles (18.4) and the triple jump (34 feet, 9 inches).
Gordon also took second place in the long jump (15-0) and 300 hurdles
(51.5).
Newport places fifth
* SOFTBALL: Newport Harbor High’s girls softball team took fifth
place in the Costa Mesa tournament with two shutout victories
Saturday.
The Sailors (3-3) defeated Century, 8-0, in the first game while
blanking Oxford Academy, 2-0, later in the day.
Darci Pennington’s two-out, two-RBI triple in the top of the
seventh inning proved the difference against Oxford, preserving the
win for starting pitcher Ashley Gleason. Pennington’s hit brought in
Katie Daniels and Clea O’Keefe.
Gleason struck out 12 and walked five in tossing a one-hitter.
Gleason’s bat did the talking in the first game with two hits,
including a triple, and an RBI. Sasha Grumman went 2 for 3 with a
double and an RBI. Julianne Bass and Jennifer Gummerman each added
RBI’s for Newport.

Sage Hill splits pair
* SOFTBALL: Rebecca Hembarsky of Sage Hill went 2 for 2 with two
runs and recorded the victory on the mound as the Lightning salvaged
their final consolation game Saturday in the Costa Mesa tournament
with a four-inning 9-3 win over St. Margaret’s at Costa Mesa. Lauren
Neale was 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI for Sage Hill (2-4-1),
which lost the first game against Santiago, 3-1.
Waves defeat ‘Eaters
* BASEBALL: Pepperdine University first baseman Mike Craig slammed
two solo home runs to lead a nine-hit attack that helped produce a
4-1 nonconference victory over the visiting UC Irvine baseball team
Saturday.
UC Irvine (13-5-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first before Pepperdine
(6-9) tied it in the fourth and took the lead for good with two more
runs in the fifth.
UCI starter Glenn Swanson (3-1) struck out four, walked one and
allowed eight hits in six innings. Erik Johnson doubled while Brett
Dalton, Matt Fisher, Mark Wagner and Gregg Wallis all added singles
for UCI, which lost to Pepperdine, 8-7, in its season opener Feb. 11.

Tars relay team sixth
* SWIMMING: Newport Harbor High’s boys swimming team placed sixth
out of 14 schools (42 points) at the Capistrano Valley relay finals
Saturday.
Newport’s 300-yard freestyle team of Michael Bury, Dan Furman,
Kyle Sherman, Clay Jorth, Sean McGhie and Telford Cottam placed
second with a 2:18.08. Bury, James Jackson, Sherman and Eric Carlson
swam to third in the 400 individual medley (4:01.50).
Irvine (98) won the event while Corona del Mar tied for 11th (16).
Sailors fall in San Diego
* VOLLEYBALL: Newport Harbor High’s boys volleyball team dropped
two matches Saturday in the San Diego Tournament of Champions as La
Costa Canyon defeated the Sailors, 25-21, 18-25, 15-12 in the first
round of the 16-team championship bracket and Mt. Carmel rallied to
top the Tars, 23-25, 25-12, 15-9 in consolation action at University
High in San Diego.
Brett Perrine led the Sailors (3-3) with eight kills in each
match, while Morgan Govaars, Ted Slater and Jon Langford had five
apiece in the opener. Langford recorded six kills against Mt. Carmel
and Slater added five kills and five blocks.
Newport Harbor squares off against nonleague host Huntington Beach
at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
