Old Glory Boat Parade beckons
For the 60th year, boats will circle Newport Harbor for the Fourth
of July Old Glory Boat Parade, which is sponsored by the American
Legion Yacht Club and American Legion Post 291.
The day starts at 7 a.m., when American Legion volunteers prepare
a $10 pancake breakfast. A $15 steak dinner will be prepared for
those who buy meal tickets in advance.
At the parade, beginning at 1 p.m., more than 50 boat owners will
dress their vessels in red, white and blue. The evening concludes
with a live band and dancing, beginning at 8:30 p.m.
The American Legion Post 291 is a place to watch the fireworks
spectacle. For more information, contact the American Legion Yacht
Club at (949) 673-5070.
Free French film
on UCI campus
The summer Free Film Series at UC Irvine kicks off Thursday with
“Donkey Skin (Peau d’ane),” an obscure French film from 1970 directed
by Jacques Demy and starring Catherine Deneuve as a princess forced
to live as a donkey in order to find her true love. The film series
brochure calls it “bursting with song, psychedelic color, and
Freudian wit” -- not quite the usual multiplex fare, but close
enough.
“Donkey Skin” screens at the humanities instructional building,
room 100, at 7 p.m. And remember, it’s free. Call (949) 824-6494 for
more information.
