Sailors look for third win
The Newport Harbor High boys basketball team will be seeking its
third summer victory when it begins competition in the Hawthorne
tournament at 3:40 p.m. today against Lawndale at Hawthorne High.
Newport pulled to a 2-2 record following a victory against Mater
Dei Sunday in the George Yardley Summer Cage Classic.
Returning from competition in the USA Junior Olympic volleyball
championships in Kentucky -- who will be available for the Sailors’
basketball squad this weekend -- are seniors-to-be Ted Slater and
Parker Stevens, along with junior-to-be Weston Dunlap and
sophomore-to-be Kyle Caldwell.
Soon-to-be seniors Tony Yaghjian and Dennis Heenan have been
leading the team thus far, Coach Larry Hirst said. But any number of
players could be stepping up this weekend after the four volleyball
players return to the mix, Hirst said.
* Struggling with off-season injuries, the Corona del Mar High
boys basketball team will wrap up Century Summer League competition
in the next few days.
The Sea Kings are 2-10 following the George Yardley Summer Cage
Classic at Newport Harbor and the CdM Summer tournament, along with
various other league games.
Sophomore-to-be Stefan Kaluz leads the team in scoring and
rebounding. Senior-to-be Ryan Lance underwent two shoulder surgeries
during the summer and should be ready to play by September, Coach
Ryan Curry said.
CdM visits Santa Margarita at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
