Officers arrest robbery suspect
Authorities on Thursday nabbed a man they think is responsible for
a bank robbery in Corona del Mar earlier this month.
Daniel Torres, 40, was arrested on suspicion of bank robbery,
Orange County Sheriff’s spokesman Jim Amormino said. Authorities
believe Torres was responsible for the July 5 robbery of a Citibank
at 3021 East Coast Highway.
Members of a regional fugitive task force, comprised of sheriff’s
deputies, Santa Ana Police officers and U.S. Marshals, spotted Torres
leaving a Laguna Hills bank on Thursday, Amormino said.
They recognized him as the prime suspect in the Citibank robbery
and identified themselves to him, Amormino said. Torres ran, they
gave chase and arrested him after a short foot pursuit, he said.
Torres is being held without bail.
Police are still seeking the so-called Big Nose Bandit, who they
think robbed a nearby Bank of America, also on July 5. That bandit is
suspected in five other bank robberies, including a second in Newport
Beach.
Police don’t think the two robberies are connected.
Police make arrest in stabbing case
Police made one arrest this week in connection with a brawl in a
Costa Mesa park that resulted in the stabbings of two people.
Costa Mesa police arrested Thomas Clark Martin Jr., 18, of Buena
Park on Wednesday, Sgt. Marty Carver said. Martin is charged with
assault with a deadly weapon and is being held in the Orange County
Jail in lieu of $500,000 bail.
Martin was arrested in connection with a July 10 fight at
Brentwood Park in the 200 block of Monte Vista Avenue, Carver said.
A group of about 30 people gathered in the park and a fight broke
out, police said. A 19-year-old and a 17-year-old, both male, were
stabbed in the melee.
One was a resident of Huntington Beach and was one from Newport
Beach, police said.
Their injuries were not life threatening, police said. The
incident is not believed to be gang related.
