Roddick to test Delgado tonight
Newport Beach Breakers’ star Ramon Delgado, currently the No. 1 men’s
singles player in World Team Tennis, will test his ability tonight in
a matchup against recent Wimbledon finalist Andy Roddick in a contest
against the St. Louis Aces.
The match begins at 7 p.m. central time.
“I think [Delgado] has a very good chance to do well,” Breakers’
Coach Dick Leach said. “The court [at St. Louis] is very slow, so
maybe Roddick’s serve will kick up a bit.”
Delgado, who has the best men’s singles record in the league at
35-11, hasn’t lost a singles set this season while leading Newport to
a 5-2 record.
The Breakers are seeking their third straight win tonight.
Ranked No. 3 in the world, Roddick will be making his St. Louis
debut, the only match of the season he is scheduled to play in.
Delgado, hampered by a knee and shoulder injury a few years back,
is currently playing the best tennis he has played in a while, Leach
said.
Leach added that Delgado is looking forward to the marquee
matchup. “He’s taking it very seriously; he’d really like to beat
[Roddick] a lot,” he said.
