Two local players resume CIF tennis competition

Estancia High senior Ellie Edles and Corona del Mar junior Melissa Matsuoka resume play in the CIF Individuals in girls’ tennis today at Seal Beach Tennis Center.

The two singles players will compete in the Round of 16. Draws will be announced today.

Edles, the two-time Orange Coast League champion who’s bound for UC Davis, earned three wins two weeks ago to advance. Two of her wins came against fellow local players, Neda Ghassemi, a Costa Mesa resident who plays for Mater Dei, and Julia Blakeley of Sage Hill. Blakeley, a junior, was the Academy League champion.

Matsuoka, the runner-up of the Pacific Coast League, went three sets with Golden West League champion Tiffany Mai of Ocean View in the third round to reach today’s Round of 16.

Matsuoka defeated Mai, 4-6, 6-2, 10-8.

The quarterfinals also take place today.

Semifinals and final matches will be played Friday, also at Seal Beach Tennis Center.
