High School Roundup: CdM girls’ basketball stuns Los Alamitos
Samantha Uehara found Trasara Alexander in the left corner for a go-ahead three-pointer with 17 seconds left, and the Corona del Mar High girls’ basketball team upset visiting Los Alamitos 36-33 on Tuesday night in a Surf League game.
Tatiana Bruening had a team-high 11 points to go with 10 rebounds and four blocked shots for the Sea Kings (15-9, 2-0 in league), who beat the No. 8-ranked team in Orange County.
Uehara had eight points and three steals, and Alara Ersu added four points and 13 rebounds.
CdM shut down the Griffins in the first half, going into halftime with an 18-9 lead.
Sydney Gandy had 10 points and Latavia Miller had five points for the Griffins (17-6, 1-1).
CdM will go on the road to face Huntington Beach (17-6, 1-1) on Thursday in a battle for first place through the first half of league.
Huntington Beach 66, Edison 46: Marisa Tanga led the host Oilers with 15 points and 11 steals in a Surf League game on Tuesday.
Meghan McIntyre also scored 15 points, and Andie Payne added eight points and three blocks for Huntington Beach.
Edison dropped to 10-11 overall and 0-2 in the league.
Marina 48, Laguna Beach 22: Emily Sakamoto had a team-high 17 points, six rebounds and three steals to lead the visiting Vikings in Tuesday’s Wave League game.
Katie Nguyen added 13 points, eight rebounds and three assists for Marina (15-9, 2-0 in league). Greta Graeler had four points and nine rebounds.
Laguna Beach dropped to 16-7 overall and 0-2 in the league.
Costa Mesa 34, Santa Ana 26: Katie Belmontes had a team-high 16 points, helping the host Mustangs grab sole possession of first place in the Orange Coast League on Tuesday.
Samantha Filner added 10 points for Costa Mesa (10-12, 5-0 in league).
Santa Ana fell to 4-1 in the league.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Edison 1, Huntington Beach 1: Nicole Field scored in the 58th minute in the visiting Chargers’ Surf League match Tuesday.
Rachelle Elve had the assist for Edison (12-5-2, 0-1-1 in league), which plays at Los Alamitos on Thursday at 6 p.m.
Kayden Heinrich scored on Delaney Brennan’s assist for Huntington Beach (11-6-5, 0-1-1), which hosts Corona del Mar on Thursday at 6 p.m.
Newport Harbor 3, Fountain Valley 1: Sofia Velasquez, Reese Bodas and Alyssa Simms all scored for the Sailors in Tuesday’s Wave League match at home.
Sadie Pitchess had two assists for Newport Harbor (13-2-5, 2-0 in league), which plays at Marina on Thursday at 3 p.m.
Fountain Valley (6-8-3, 0-2-1) plays at Laguna Beach on Thursday at 5 p.m.
Los Alamitos 2, Corona del Mar 1: Mia Ferrentino scored on Alex Ianni’s assist for the Sea Kings in Tuesday’s Surf League match at Newport Harbor High.
CdM fell to 11-2-3 overall and 1-1 in the league.
GIRLS’ WATER POLO
Laguna Beach 7, Los Alamitos 6: Nicole Struss scored two goals for the Breakers in Tuesday’s Surf League match at Corona del Mar High.
Tea Poljak, Molly Renner, Rachael Carver, Cici Stewart and Morgan Van Alphen also scored for Laguna Beach (16-1, 2-0 in league), the top-ranked team in CIF Southern Section Division 1 and 2.
Laguna Beach plays at No. 5 CdM on Thursday at 4 p.m.
Edison 19, Fountain Valley 3: Sam Worley and Delaney Lewellyn each scored four goals for the Chargers in Tuesday’s Wave League match at Corona del Mar High.
Edison improved to 1-1 in the league.
Sydney Henderson scored two goals for Fountain Valley (0-2 in league).
