High School Roundup: Huntington Beach girls’ basketball advances to CIF quarterfinals
Andie Payne had nine points to go with 16 rebounds and three blocked shots to lead the Huntington Beach High girls’ basketball team to a 35-34 win in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 2AA playoffs on Saturday night at Crescenta Valley High.
The game was a rematch of the Division 1A quarterfinals in 2016, when the Falcons beat the Oilers 51-48.
Meghan McIntyre added seven points for the Oilers (23-6). Bella Serrano and Alyssa Real each had six points.
Costa Mesa 54, Oro Grande Riverside Prep 38: Katie Belmontes had 23 points to pace the visiting Mustangs in Saturday’s CIF Southern Section Division 5AA second-round game.
Tarah Harmon and McKayla Ortiz each added 12 points for the Mustangs (16-12).
Covina Northview 55, Fountain Valley 42: Margaret Tengan scored 16 points for the host Barons in a CIF Southern Section Division 4AA second-round game on Saturday.
Fountain Valley led second-seeded Northview 26-25 at halftime.
BOYS’ SOCCER
Edison 3, Palos Verdes 0: Ethan Van Buren, Sander Booij and Wyatt Burris scored goals for the visiting Chargers in Saturday’s second-round match of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.
Jake Whitcomb, Jaxon Rogers and Van Buren provided assists on the goals. Bennett Flory stopped four shots in net.
Edison (15-5-5) will host top-seeded Los Angeles Loyola (24-1-2) in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
Fountain Valley 5, Riverside King 2: Dylan Duong recorded a hat-trick for the host Barons in a CIF Southern Section Division 2 second-round match on Saturday.
Sebastian Rus and Devon Verde also scored for Fountain Valley (16-6).
Godinez 1, Estancia 0: The host Eagles (15-7-3) were shut out in Saturday’s second-round match of the CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoffs.
Nuevo Nuview Bridge 2, Sage Hill 1: The host Lightning (7-7) were eliminated from the CIF Southern Section Division 6 playoffs on Saturday.
Santa Barbara Bishop Diego 10, Pacifica Christian Orange County 2: The visiting Cardinals scored seven goals in the first half of Saturday’s CIF Southern Section Division 7 second-round match.
Pacifica Christian finished the season 7-9-4.
GIRLS’ WATER POLO
Dana Hills 8, Edison 7: Sophomore Ella Jensen and senior Isabella Sorrensen each scored twice for the Chargers in the CIF Southern Section Division 4 second-round playoff match Saturday at Tesoro High.
Riley Jolley, Lily Worley and Hannah Taylor also scored for Edison (13-17), which nearly rallied from a 7-3 deficit after three quarters.
West Torrance 14: Los Amigos 12: The Lobos finished their season 16-11 after falling in the CIF Southern Section Division 6 quarterfinals Saturday.
