Glendale City Church to hear from Senate chaplain
Rear Adm. Barry Black, chaplain of the U.S. Senate, will speak at 11 a.m. next Saturday at Glendale City Church, 610 E. California Ave.
Black served in the U.S. Navy for 27 years, culminating as chief of Navy Chaplains. He has written two books: his autobiography in 2006 titled “From the Hood to the Hill” and “The Blessing of Adversity” in 2011.

Since becoming senate chaplain in 2003, Black has received national attention a number of times for being a voice of conscience to U.S. leaders.
During the government shutdown of 2013, his morning invocations in the Senate chamber became publicized for their calling Congress to put the needs of the country ahead of personal political agendas.
On the 11th day of the shutdown, his prayer included ,”Give our lawmakers the wisdom to distinguish between truth and error ... Give them a hatred of all hypocrisy, deceit and shame as they seek to replace them with gentleness, patience and truth.”
In response to the deaths of Eric Garner and Michael Brown in 2014, Black helped stage a walkout of 150 congressional members and staffers to the steps of the Capitol where he prayed, “Forgive us when we have failed to lift our voices for those who could not speak or breathe themselves.”
