Annual Salvation Army Hoop Heroes basketball game set for Sunday

The sixth annual Salvation Army Hoop Heroes basketball game between Glendale firefighters and the Glendale Police Department will be held at around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday in the gymnasium at Glendale High School, 1440 E. Broadway.

Prior to that game, members of the Glendale Sunrise Rotary will play basketball against members of the Glendale Noon Kiwanis Club, and members of the local Special Olympics will play an exhibition game.

Kicking off the event will be a free-throw tournament, benefiting the Crescenta Cañada youth basketball program, starting at 2:30 p.m.

The event benefits the Salvation Army’s after-school program called the Zone, which is designed for youth ages 8 to 13. They can take part in a program called Diagnostic Online Reading Assessment, known as DORA, which helps young people achieve higher literacy rates.

They can also get help with homework and have a safe place to go after school Monday through Friday. In addition, the Zone program offers various practical courses such as good sportsmanship, manners and etiquette.

Tickets are $5, and attendees are also asked to bring in a can of food for the Salvation Army’s food pantry. Each attendee will receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win prizes.
