Sports Roundup: St. Francis basketball rallies to top Marina in playoff opener

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

St. Francis 66, Marina 62: St. Francis rallied in the fourth quarter to register a CIF Southern Section Division III-AA first-round road win Friday.

Andre Henry finished with 29 points and 10 rebounds and teammate Dennis Flowers III collected 25 points for the Golden Knights, who overcame a 35-24 halftime deficit. St. Francis trailed, 50-45, entering the fourth quarter.

St. Francis, which received an at-large entry after placing fifth in the Mission League, will meet Beckman in a second-round home game at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The Golden Knights improved to 23-7.

Temple City 49, Flintridge Prep 36: Visiting Flintridge Prep ended its season Friday with a CIF Southern Section Division IV-AA first-round defeat.

Kevin Ashworth had a team-high 11 points for Flintridge Prep (14-12). Zach Kim and Matthew Ho had seven points each for the Rebels.

The Rebels trailed, 25-16, at halftime and 34-29 after the third quarter.

Flintridge Prep took second in the Prep League.

Wiseburn Da Vinci 72, St. Monica Academy 38: St. Monica’s season wrapped up Friday with a home defeat in a CIF Southern Section Division IV-A first-round game at New Revelation Baptist Church in Pasadena.

The Crusaders (12-8) took second in the International League.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 4, Serrano 1: Maddie Leroy collected two goals and one assist Friday to lift the host Tologs to a CIF Southern Section Division III second-round win at the Glendale Sports Complex.

Flintridge Sacred Heart (10-4-3) received one goal apiece from Emily Gomez and Hillary Howard. Gomez had two assists.

Flintridge Sacred Heart, which took second in the Mission League, will meet second-seeded South Torrance (20-7) in a quarterfinal road match Tuesday at a time to be determined.

WRESTLING

Hoover in CIF Southern Section Individual Wrestling Championship: A contingent of Hoover athletes participated in the Southern Division event Friday at Brea Olinda High in Brea.

Hoover’s Davit Vardanian went 3-1 in the 152-pound division and teammate Andrew Shin was 2-1 (182). Both advanced to the consolation round at 11 a.m. Saturday at the same venue.

Also for Hoover, Andrew West went 1-2 in the 195-pound class. Going 0-2 for the Tornadoes were Louis Socito (113), Zach Acosta (120), Ed Markosian (126), Hatut Mutafyan (145) and Abel Trejo (220).

MEN’S TENNIS

Glendale Community College 7, San Diego Mesa College 2: The Vaqueros (3-1) posted a nonconference home win Friday.
