Huntington Beach resident Alley Perkins joined two other Orange County women in being honored at Susan G. Komen Orange County’s annual Survivor Celebration and Awards luncheon last month in Corona del Mar.
Perkins, 22, was recognized with the Most Inspirational Co-Survivor award. When she was 17, she received a full-ride scholarship to play softball at George Washington University. But around that time, her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Perkins declined her scholarship in order to care for her mother during her cancer treatment, according to a news release.
Perkins recently graduated from Cal State Long Beach and is a softball coach at Santa Ana College.
Laguna Niguel resident Kathleen Miller was honored as the Most Inspirational Breast Cancer Survivor, and Costa Mesa resident Karen Herold was named Outstanding Breast Health Advocate.
Susan G. Komen is a nonprofit organization that provides funding for breast cancer research and support services.
