Angels center fielder Mike Trout will not play Wednesday night for triple-A Salt Lake and is leaving his minor league rehab assignment after one game to be reevaluated.

Trout began a rehab stint Tuesday but exited after just two innings because of soreness in his surgically repaired left knee.

Before the Angels’ game Wednesday in Seattle, manager Ron Washington said Trout reported he was feeling better, and Washington hoped the three-time MVP would be able to serve as the designated hitter for Salt Lake that night.

But later Wednesday, the Angels announced that Trout would not be in the lineup and was returning to Southern California.

Angels star Mike Trout lasted just two innings in his first minor league rehabilitation start because of soreness in his surgically-repaired left knee.

Trout went on the injured list April 30 because of a torn meniscus after hitting .220 with 10 homers and 14 RBIs in 29 games. It’s the latest in a long line of injuries for the Angels superstar over several seasons.

Last season Trout played just 82 games because of a broken hamate bone. He spent five weeks on the IL in 2022 because of a back injury and missed most of the 2021 season because of a strained calf muscle.

Angels sweep Mariners

Brandon Drury drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the eighth inning as the Angels completed a three-game sweep of the struggling Seattle Mariners 2-1.

The Mariners were booed by fans after losing for the eighth time in nine games and for the 20th time in 29 games, slipping to 53-51. Despite the extended troubles, Seattle is a game behind first-place Houston (53-49) in the AL West.

Mariners starter Luis Castillo worked six shutout innings before the Angels finally scored against the bullpen. Nolan Schanuel led off the eighth with a single against reliever Gregory Santos and scored on a two-out single by Willie Calhoun, knotting the score at 1-all.

Santos (0-1) then left the game and Drury put the Angels ahead with a single off Trent Thornton that scored pinch-runner Kevin Pillar from second base.

José Soriano gives up one run in 7⅔ innings and Luis Rengifo delivers a two-run single as the Angels defeat Seattle for their sixth win in eight games.

It was a welcome moment of triumph for Drury, who came in hitting .164 with one homer and just seven RBI in 50 games.

“Anytime you come up with the big hit, it feels good,” Drury said. “But obviously it’s been a tough start to the season for me, for sure. I felt good today and hopefully I can use this to keep it rolling for the two-plus months we’ve got left.”

Santos left after throwing 16 pitches in the eighth because of right knee pain, giving up one run on two singles before being lifted by manager Scott Servais and trainers.

Castillo pitched well for Seattle, giving up five hits and two walks while striking out seven over six innings.

Griffin Canning gave up one earned run on four hits over five innings for the Angels.

Jo Adell’s two-out single in the ninth inning drives in Brandon Drury and helps the Angels secure a 3-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners.

“He was outstanding,” Washington said. “You go back four or five games, there’s quite a few situations he was in out there that he caved in and didn’t get out of them. Today, he competed and got out of them.”

Carlos Estévez pitched the ninth for his 20th save. Hans Crause (4-0) pitched a scoreless seventh inning.

Angels left-hander José Quijada worked a scoreless inning in his first appearance since April 27, 2023, after undergoing Tommy John surgery last May.

The Angels held the Mariners to one run in all three games and were the first team to sweep Seattle.

“No real production in this series at all offensively,” Servais said. “[Mitch Haniger] big homer today, some other guys hit some balls hard, but not much to write home about. We’re in a situation where we’re not catching any breaks and we’re not creating a lot of opportunities there.”
