Dodgers’ Ryu hit hard, leaves injured in 9-0 loss to Giants
ON THE MOUND: Hyun-Jin Ryu gave up four runs in the first inning, after which he was removed with what the Dodgers described as an irritated left shoulder. Chris Perez walked a couple of batters in the second inning, but didn’t give up a run. Carlos Frias pitched three innings and gave up a back-breaking two-run home run to Brandon Crawford in the fifth inning. Kevin Correia also gave up a home run, a three-run blast to Travis Ishikawa in the seventh inning.
AT THE PLATE: Justin Turner drew a two-out walk in the fifth inning, but Adrian Gonzalez flied out to center field against Giants starter Madison Bumgarner to end the threat. Slumping Yasiel Puig took part in early batting practice and was one for three with a walk. Because the Dodgers were facing a left-hander in Bumgarner, they started Turner in place of the left-handed-hitting Dee Gordon at second base and Scott Van Slyke instead of Carl Crawford in left field. It didn’t matter. Bumgarner limited the Dodgers to three hits and two walks over seven innings.
ROSTER MOVES: Left-hander Scott Elbert, who last pitched in the major leagues more than two years ago, was promoted from triple-A Albuquerque. Elbert underwent reconstructive elbow surgery last year and was removed from the Dodgers’ 40-man roster in July when his recovery stalled. To create a place for Elbert on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers designated right-hander Red Patterson for assignment.
MEDICAL REPORT: The Dodgers could be adding another left-handed reliever. Paco Rodriguez threw 24 pitches in a simulated game Friday, after which he said, “Everything felt great. Everything was sharp.” Rodriguez, who has been sidelined with a strained back muscle, could be activated from the disabled list as early as Saturday, Manager Don Mattingly said.
