Ducks’ Jakob Silfverberg back on the ice, but not quite ready to return
Ducks right wing Jakob Silfverberg skated on his own Tuesday but is not ready to return from an apparent concussion, Coach Randy Carlyle said.
Carlyle stopped short of saying “concussion” but used “protocol” and other language associated with a head injury to describe Silfverberg’s recovery from an upper-body injury. He said if Silfverberg made it through Tuesday fine, “the next step will be skating with contact … and then he goes through the neuro-psych tests — whatever the steps are back to full availability.”
Silfverberg, the Ducks’ third-leading goal scorer, was hit against the glass by Colorado’s Nikita Zadorov last Thursday and hit his head on the ice when he fell.
Carlyle also said John Gibson skated in his recovery from an upper-body injury but didn’t know the goaltender’s status for Wednesday’s game against the Edmonton Oilers, the Ducks’ final game before the All-Star break.
Gibson might be well enough to play in the Pacific Division game, but Carlyle acknowledged that Gibson could get full recovery time if they sit him.
Carlyle’s 300th win
Carlyle didn’t know Monday was his 300th coaching win with Anaheim until he got text messages afterward.
“You’ve got to look back at where you’re at and the situations that you’re presented with, and I feel very fortunate to be in the one I’m in,” Carlyle said.
Asked if it was special to reach the milestone in Winnipeg, Canada, where he has coaching and playing roots, he said jokingly, “Well, the last time I walked across the ice in Winnipeg, to tell you the truth, was the last time I coached the Toronto Maple Leafs [in 2015]. As I was walking across the ice, we just got our butt kicked, [5-1], I said, ‘I don’t know how much longer this is going to go. This could be it.’”
Etc.
Nate Thompson (Achilles) is on a long-term injury loan to San Diego … Forward Stefan Noesen was put on waivers.
